Mike Leriche

As a UNH graduate student, I have been interning with UNHInnovation (UNHI) to learn more about copyright law and the future of intellectual property. My research has culminated in a graduate studies project, a Creative Works Symposium. The goal of this project is to better inform faculty and students about the impact of intellectual property rights on universities and to answer questions faculty or students may have in regards to intellectual property, including copyright and trademark laws. These goals coincide and promote the mission statement of UNHInnovation to advocate for, manage, and promote UNH’s intellectual property.  UNHI strives to create partnerships between UNH and the business community and is responsible for licensing UNH activities and supporting start-up companies based on UNH's innovations.

With that mission in mind, UNHI and I are excited to announce that a Creative Works Symposium will be held on Wednesday, April 29th, at the UNH Memorial Union Building (MUB) from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The symposium will consist of interactive panels and discussion sessions and will address many common questions regarding universities and intellectual property law, including copyrights, patents, and trademarks. The symposium boasts several guest speakers with expertise in intellectual property, a continental breakfast, and networking opportunities.  Some highlights of the symposium include: what are trademarks and copyrights, who owns the works authors create, how to protect an author’s copyrights, fair use in the classroom and course lectures, open source licenses and software development, commercializing creative works, and where to find help with issues regarding intellectual property.

It is the hope of UNHI, and my hope as an intern, that the information provided will be insightful and will lead to a better understanding of the role of intellectual property both within the university classroom and the research lab. We hope to see you there!

For more information on the symposium you can contact Timothy Willis at 603-862-0948 or timothy.willlis@unh.edu.
