Using a high-energy proton beam to deliver radiation as precisely as possible to a tumor volume minimizes radiation delivery to healthy tissue. The invention uses a series of stacked scintillators, with each layer situated at a ninety-degree angle with respect to the previous layer. These stacked scintillators can accurately track a proton as it moves three-dimensionally through a patient.
